Eastern Cape Tourism, Accommodation, Activities & Directory

Nieu-Bethesda

Although perfect for a quiet overnight stop the many guest establishments in the village of Nieu Bethesda offer various activities and facilities for the tourist. Cyclists can bring their own bikes or hire them and there are walks/hikes and even a climb to the top of Compassberg. There is horse-riding on a farm and bird watching everywhere (guided or unguided). Visitors can take a donkey cart ride or go on scenic drives from the village. For the artist there is a perfect environment for photography, sketching and painting and a number of novels have been completed here. Most establishments are self-catering but the restaurants and coffee shops make this unnecessary - B & B's are also available. The churches here welcome visitors. Some even return to celebrate a country wedding. The D.R. Church can accommodate up to 600 people. Holistic-therapies are available and the general peace and quiet and safety are additional factors which contribute towards a rejuvenating stay. The "Owl House", Helen Martins' home, has become the best known outsider art venue in the country. She called it the Owl House although Owls are only some of the more than live hundred cement statues in the Camel Yard. Helen's search for '"light and brightness" is evident in her home.
